Hi friends,
Coming to you live from Austin, Texas. Here is your weekly dose of Arman’s Antics, a list of what I’m exploring and enjoying. Please consider forwarding this along to one friend.
What I’m very excited about
My first article I wrote as part of the Write of Passage online course I’ve started. I published it last Wednesday to great fanfare (+9 new subscribers for a total of 51 now!). It takes less than five minutes to read. Check it out if you didn’t already get a chance and let me know what you think 👍 👎 😐 . Or read it again because it’s even better the second time.
Workout program I’m starting again
Starting Strength created by Mark Rippetoe. This is the best strength training routine I’ve tried. Take that with a grain of salt because I’m not competing in any World’s Strongest Man competitions anytime soon. BUT I take my physical training seriously. This is the simplest way I have been able to gain serious strength in minimal time.
It’s all about barbell exercises (squat, deadlift, bench, overhead press, and power clean). The main reason I like it is because Mr. Rippetoe is a badass.
Here’s my current lifts (as of 10/17/2022):
Squat: 225lbs x 5 reps x 3 sets
Deadlift: 275lbs x 5 reps x 1 set
Bench: 185lbs x 5 reps x 3 sets
Press: 115lbs x 5 reps x 3 sets
Power clean: 135lbs x 5 reps x 1 set
I’ll keep posting updates on these to keep me accountable.
What I’m listening to
How to Get Rich without getting lucky podcast. That title alone makes you curious, doesn’t it? It was originally a tweet storm from 2018 that currently has 212,000+ likes. This is a 3.5-hour episode created by one of my favorite humans Naval Ravikant. I’ve listened 4 times and I notice my bank account immediately increases after each listen (coincidence?).
A few gems to wet your whistle:
Money won’t solve all your problems but it will solve all your money problems.
Earning money is a skill that can be developed.
You can’t get rich renting out your time. You have to own a piece of a business.
What I’m still reading
Awareness by Anthony de Mello. You know when you find a book that’s so good you don’t want it to end? That’s me reading this one for the 3rd time. So I have decided to only read one section per day (3-5 pages). This is allowing the contents of the book to really sink into my bones. I’m absorbing the material on a deeper level. The book is becoming a part of me.
Listen to this pathetic story and see if you can notice your story, my story, everybody’s story:
“Until I get this object (money, friendship, anything) I’m not going to be happy; I’ve got to strive to get it and then when I’ve got it, I’ve got to strive to keep it. I get a temporary thrill. Oh, I’m so thrilled, I’ve got it!” But how long does that last? A few minutes, a few days at the most. When you get your brand-new car, how long does the thrill last? Until your next attachment is threatened!
Random thought
What is the #1 sign that a kid is going to become an annoying adult? They answer roll call in elementary school with “present!”
That’s all I’ve got for you this week. Please give me feedback. I want to hear from you. I’m most active on Twitter. What do you want more of? Less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know.
Have a terrific Tuesday, friends!
Cheers,
Arman
